The AOD Furnace Slag Skimming Machine is a key auxiliary piece of equipment in the stainless steel smelting process. It is primarily used to thoroughly remove the slag from the surface of the molten bath inside the AOD furnace (Argon Oxygen Decarburization furnace) after refining is completed and before tapping, preventing the slag from entering the ladle together with the molten steel.
Slag Removal and Purification: Removes the slag rich in sulfur, phosphorus, oxides, and non-metallic inclusions from the surface of the molten bath, improving the cleanliness of the molten steel.
Prevention of Sulfur/Phosphorus Reversion: The slag contains high levels of sulfur and phosphorus. If not removed, the mixing of slag and steel during tapping can cause sulfur and phosphorus reversion in the molten steel, adversely affecting stainless steel quality.
Reduction of Slag Carryover: Controls the amount of slag carryover, reducing the processing burden on subsequent LF refining or continuous casting operations.
Protection of the Tapping Hole: Prevents highly basic and highly oxidizing slag from corroding the tapping hole and ladle lining, extending the service life of refractory materials.
Slag-Metal Separation: Achieves effective separation of slag from molten steel, creating favorable conditions for subsequent fine-tuning of alloys and precise control of chemical composition.
Slag Recovery and Utilization: The removed slag can be collected and processed centrally to recover alloying elements (such as chromium and nickel) or reused as metallurgical auxiliary materials.
